Description

An attempt to capture some Perseid Meteors, 12-13 Aug 2015. This was very poorly framed in that I got part of my house awning in the frame (the blur at upper right). The background is a Deep Sky Stacker stack of 141 36-sec images (with a 4-sec delay between images) taken with a Canon PowerShot A560 on a fixed tripod. The camera has nasty amp glow, visible in the upper left corner even though I used matched darks to try and eliminate it. I did not use flats (obviously). I then examined each aligned, stretched image looking for meteor trails. The few I found I layered on top of the background, applied a hide all layer mask, disabled the mask and cut it to show the meteor trail, Gaussian blurred the mask, and adjusted levels in each meteor layer to try and match the background. While this wasn’t terribly successful, it was an interesting exercise. I watched visually for a while and saw quite a few meteors. Evidently our eyes are pretty sensitive to motion and have good dynamic range, whereas of course digital cameras excel at integration. Integration is no advantage when capturing fast meteors, and most of the Perseids I saw visually were fast, short trails. In addition, this is not a wide field of view compared to what you can see visually. In this image, Cassiopeia is roughly at the center, the Andromeda Galaxy is visible at right center, and the Double Cluster in Perseus is visible at bottom center.
